On my first day of work at my first job out of college, I was not sure what to expect. A consulting firm in Manhattan? That just sounded intimidating. Yes, all the people with whom I interviewed seemed nice, but what were they really like? Within minutes of arriving at the office, however, I was relieved to discover that they really were as dynamic, friendly and welcoming as they had first appeared. Nearly every person in the office stopped by my workstation at some point during my first day to introduce themselves, ask how I was transitioning to life in the city, and offer their assistance in anything I might need. My new colleagues sent me templates of documents, examples of spreadsheets and interview invitations, as well as links to websites that they found to be helpful. Not only was I not intimidated on this first day, but I was remarkably calm and comfortable.
My first few days also coincided with the annual summer picnic, and, in between, soccer and extreme kayaking, I happened to mention that I enjoy planning parties and social gatherings. Without hesitation, our office manager Ronnie asked, “Great, how would you like to be the new event planner?” Looking back, I think it was among my first indications of what my experience at EA would be like.
Tangibly evident within my first few days were several characteristics that have come to define EA for me - implicit trust, openness, and a willingness to allow people to take on as much responsibility as they are willing to handle. You want to plan a charity poker tournament? Sure. You want to take a stab at a financial model? Absolutely. You want to lead a physician interview? Go for it. From day one, I have been encouraged to challenge myself both professionally and personally. Whether I am writing a slide deck for a client presentation or helping plan the company holiday party, I am assisted and encouraged to achieve continually higher levels of creativity and excellence.
